Fluvoxamine’s effect on the levels of the sleep-hormone melatonin may explain some of its anti-COVID-19 benefits.

Key Messages

An additional possible mechanism of action of fluvoxamine against COVID-19 is described and discussed.

Melatonin is well known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects and several different studies have revealed that it has anti-COVID-19 effects.

Fluvoxamine is known to increase melatonin levels by blocking the activity of enzymes that break it down. This article proposes that increased melatonin levels might contribute to the anti-COVID-19 activity of fluvoxamine.
